What’s Over the Horizon? Future Challenges and Opportunities Facing Sustainable Forest Management
April 1-3, 2024
Arkansas Center for Forest Business, College of Forestry, Agriculture, and Natural Resources
Little Rock, Arkansas
The 2024 ISFRE annual meeting will be in-person in Little Rock, Arkansas, on April 1-3, 2024. The event includes keynotes, general, and poster presentations on the meeting theme.
- April 1, registration in the afternoon
- April 2, whole day meeting and poster presentations throughout the day
- April 3, morning meeting and afternoon tour
Highlights
- Keynote topics include the forest non-market evaluation given by Congressman Bruce Westerman who represents Arkansas’s 4th congressional district. He is the only forester in the United States Congress currently, he holds an MS in forestry from Yale, and a BS in engineering from Arkansas-Fayetteville. Congressman Westerman will discuss congressional initiatives he thinks will benefit forests and forest landowners and provide insights into what challenges and opportunities for sustainable forest management he sees on the horizon.
- There will also be a 4-person panel of industry professionals who will discuss what they see as research needs in the field of forestry and what challenges and opportunities industry is facing and may face soon with respect to sustainable forests.
- The field trip will take place on the afternoon of April 3, 2024 at the Wilson Brothers Sawmill and Forestry Operations. This is a unique setup as they utilize their own logging workforce and work closely with nearby landowners on a continuing basis to ensure timber supply. You will get an up-close look at the mill and hear from Frank Wilson how the company has adapted to market changes over the last several decades and where he sees opportunities and challenges longer term.
- General presentations include topics in the economics of forestry, forest management, forest carbon, climate change, wildfire, non-market and ecosystem services, economic contributions, timberland investments, timber market, policy and trade, etc.
- Student posters will be automatically enrolled for Student Poster Awards.
- Continuing education credits from Society of American Foresters will be provided.
- Student research presentations will be automatically enrolled for the Forest Business Economics Awards sponsored by the Journal of Forest Business Research. Three Winners will receive free page charges in the Journal of Forest Business Research, there is no cash award.
- Student posters will, as in previous years, compete for small cash prizes and awards, that will be announced at breakfast Wednesday morning.
